Hike up through the gorgeous North Fork Cimarroncito Creek valley. As you ascend, you're actually going backwards in (geological) time.
Leave Cimarroncito going south. At just over 1 mile, stop and visit Waite Phillips' Hunting Lodge for a fun tour.
Then head west up the Cimarroncito Creek valley. After another half mile, bear right up the North Fork valley. Note the incredible geological formations.
About 3 miles up the North Fork valley, you come to Cyphers Mine.
Destination Info
Cyphers Mine is a recreated gold mining camp. Look for a gold mine tour (claustrophobics beware), gold panning, and one of the best evening programs at Philmont: the Stomp. You will NOT be sleeping in your tent - your entire crew will sleep in an Adirondac cabin. Showers are available - it's COLD river water unless you gather wood for the wood-fired heater (good luck finding wood!).
Activities Enroute
Tour the cabin at Hunting Lodge.
