Description
One of the most scenic days at Philmont. Begin with an easy walk through Hidden Valley and stop to look out over the plains from Window Rock. (We strongly discourage the alternate route because you'll miss these views.) Climb down from Window Rock and stop at Waite Phillips' Hunting Lodge for a tour. The work your way up the Cimarroncito Creek Valley, turning into the North Fork Valley at about mile 4, and enjoy the incredible cliffs and rock formations.
On the Way
Hike through Hidden Valley and look out from Window Rock, two of the most spectacular natural features at Philmont.
Stop at Hunting Lodge (about 3-1/2 miles) for break and a cabin tour.
Water
Water is pleantiful along the route. Potable water is available at Aspen Springs, Hunting Lodge, and Cyphers Mine. Water may be filtered from Cimarroncito Creek from about mile 3 on.
Alternate Routes
The alternate route through Cimarroncito instead of Hidden Valley is about 1-1/2 miles (and an hour hiking time) shorter and avoids about 400 feet of climbing, but misses Hidden Valley and Window Rock — two of the best natural features at Philmont. Not recommended.
