Description
A moderately long day, mostly downhill, generally following Rayado Creek. Your trail contours 50 to 100 feet above the creek on the south side of the canyon for the first 3 miles. Across the creek, you have views of Lookout Peak, then Crater Peak, and Rayado Peak.
After about 3 miles, continue to contour at about 8,200 feet while the creek continues to drop away below you until about 5 miles into your hike. Then begin a mile and a half descent to Carson Meadows for program activities.
Leave Carson Meadows and retrace your steps for 1/4 mile, then turn north toward Rayado Creek. Pass through Old Abreu Camp, cross the creek, and continue east along the creek to Abreu.
On the Way
Carson Meadows is about 6-1/2 miles into your hike and has a search and rescue and wilderness first aid program.
Water
Potable water is available at Fish Camp, Carson Meadows, and Abreu. On trail at about 3 miles you can take a 1/2-mile side hike toward Craigs Camp and reach Rayado Creek. You cross the creek again about the 7-mile point.
